I’ve always detested fashion articles and blog posts that give rules (based on your size, shape, age, etc.). I have heard the rule that plus size women shouldn’t tuck in their t-shirts because they’ll show their tummy. {Cue eye roll} But, baby, I’m a rule breaker and I firmly believe that rules like this are meant to be broken. I won’t allow anyone to police my body or tell me how to wear my clothes and you shouldn’t either!

That said, let’s talk about tucked t-shirts, shall we?

There are a number of ways to tuck in a t-shirt. It’s a simple idea, but the smallest adjustment can totally change your look. Tucking in your shirt truly is an art and can be a bit daunting to some. So, I’m here to solve any confusion and help you decide how to tuck in based on the look you’re going for.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in!

The prep:

Tuck your shirt in tight so it almost looks like a bodysuit. This style is best worn with high and super high waisted jeans or a pencil skirt.

The laid back cool:

Tuck the front half of your shirt in and leave the sides and back out. This is great for when you’re trying to show off that fierce belt you just bought.

The blouse:

Tuck your entire shirt into your pants/skirt and then pull it out about half way. It will give it a blouse look and can change your entire look depending on how much — or how little — you pull out.

The half moon:

Tuck just the front, middle section of your shirt in, leaving the everything else hanging out. This will make you look like you cared just enough, but not too much. It can have an effortless chic appeal if done right. This look works well with sweaters, too.

The IDGAF:

Tuck in just one side of your shirt (this also works great for a button down shirt). This style ends up showcasing two different looks in one: exposing your belt and waist on one side while covering the other.

Mindful Monday: Start Your Week Off Right

If this isn’t one of the most Monday-est Mondays there ever were…

Daylight Saving Time is a trip, man. We move forward one hour in the Spring and back one hour in the Fall…but why? We’re no longer a primarily agricultural economy. Don’t get me wrong, I love when the days are longer. Besides loving sunlight, it’s a reminder that Summer is right around the corner. (Hallelujah!) Still, waking up an hour earlier is no easy task. I can’t even tell you how many times I hit snooze this morning. ((YAWN))

Anyway, what I wanted to talk with you today about was the importance of mindfulness. (Especially on days like today when it may feel like things aren’t going the way you’d like them to go or something’s just ‘off.’)

Creating a mindfulness practice is one of the most important things one can do for oneself. Focusing on the present moment and taking a break from the chaos around you is so key for both your overall life and your sanity. I notice such a difference in my overall disposition when I press pause and take some time to just Be. Focusing on what I want from the day, week, month or year allows me to hold something in mind that I’m working toward. As a result, everything tends to sync up and just, well, flow.

My biggest advice if your life has been feeling a bit out of wack, would be to create a routine that begins with setting your intentions for the day in the morning and ends with preparing for the next day before bed. If you’re interested in beginning a mindfulness routine, here’s a really great article on how to start.

Doremiel Organics Review: Honey Skincare

Have you heard of Doremiel Organics yet? They’re all over Instagram, so I was really excited that they sent me three of their products to try: the organic honey anti-age eye moisturizer ($25), organic honey moisture serum ($33), and organic honey revitalizing night cream ($36).   

My first impression of the products was that the packaging is nice and the products smell really good. There are definite notes of sweet honey, but overall the smell is very clean and light.

Honey, for those who don’t know, is a natural antibacterial that treats acne and delivers antioxidants to the skin to prevent aging. (Perfect for someone in her 30s who still breaks out occasionally and also cares about reducing fine lines and wrinkles!) Another natural ingredient in their products are Amla fruit which is one of the most potent antioxidants in the world and improves collagen and elasticity to the skin.

I’ve used about a dozen different skincare products trying to get rid of a few problem areas on my face. Specifically, breakouts that won’t go away and keep coming back. I was thinking perhaps that’s because I’ve had a chemical overload. Maybe my skin just needed a boost from something natural?

That’s why I was excited to try an organic product line. Every product they make is organic, which I can appreciate.

My mother hopped on the “organic everything” bandwagon years ago, but I’ve been slow to follow. And, honestly, I’ve only recently started to care about what I put on my skin. Given that the skin is the our largest organ, it’s important to pay close attention to what we’re slathering on it.

Doremiel is non-GMO and contains no gluten, parabens, hydrogenates, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate or artificial frangrances. So, even those with the most sensitive skin should be able to use their products.

While the products I tested didn’t stop my breakouts, they did “heal” my skin. My face has never felt more soft and my skin has never felt more supple than since I started using Doremiel. I’m curious to find out how my skin would react to their organic honey gentle cleansing jelly ($21.50) and their honey gentle toner ($21.50). I would imagine if I added those products to my skincare routine, I would have had even better results!

I’ll continue to use these creams/serum and post any updates should I have them. In the meantime, keep checking back for more beauty-related content.

The Importance of Self-love

The above quote is so true. Often, we spend so much time and emotional energy loving others and treating them right that we forget to do the same for ourselves.

In fact, the first time I did a real boudoir photo shoot, it was a gift for my partner at the time. Now, thanks to my partnership with Parfait Lingerie, I’ve donned lingerie for half a dozen photoshoots. Instead of taking beautiful pictures to make someone else smile, I do it for myself. I get to be the one delighted by the beautiful images of myself in barely anything all in an effort to celebrate self-love and body positivity. I hope that my photos inspire other women to love their bodies exactly as they are, “flaws” and all.

But, if they don’t…oh effing welI, I did it for me first. Just as you always should.

They say to put your oxygen mask on first. Well, do it, damn it.

In case you needed to hear this today: Take care of you before you take care of everyone else. Self-care is so very important, babes. And, as femmes, women, people of color, queer folks…our needs are often left unmet by others. So, we’ve got to take action and do something about it!

I love taking long, hot baths and getting mani-pedis. And I also enjoy taking pictures in lingerie, (obvi). There’s something really powerful about a plus size queer femme of color owning and loving her body and sharing that self-love with the world. It’s pretty radical, if you ask me.
