OOTD: B.Yellowtail by Native American Fashion Designer Bethany Yellowtail

Fashion 0 Comments

I first wrote about Native American fashion for a mainstream audience back in 2013 when I profiled Sho Sho Esquiro for Fusion (now Splinter), the ABC/Univision joint-venture. The Kaska Dene/Cree fashion designer was making waves on the catwalks of New York City with her Native-infused, never-before-seen Fashion Week designs.

Four years later and there are even more Indigenous fashion designers on the scene, such as one of my absolute faves, Bethany Yellowtail, creator of B.Yellowtail. Hardly a newcomer, though, Yellowtail launched her website in 2014 and this summer she held a pop-up shop and fashion show that I attended in Hollywood.

Yellowtail, 28, is Northern Cheyenne and Crow. She left her home state of Montana in 2007 to hone her craft at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. Upon graduating in 2009, she worked for BCBG Max Azria, then became a pattern maker for private labels, eventually creating her own brand.

“I realized there is so much [cultural appropriation] going on that I decided I am not even going to get mad anymore, but I decided I was going to do something about it,” Yellowtail said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. “Ultimately, I want to let my work become a learning opportunity and design pieces with cultural integrity.”

What I love most about Yellowtail is her commitment to Native and other political causes. She’s created work in support of activist efforts such as the 2017 Women’s March and the protests at Standing Rock. I love when creatives contribute their talents to important causes. It goes to show the difference we can all make regardless of our career field.

After attending Yellowtail’s Summer fashion show, she graciously sent me a few pieces from her collection. Lucky for you, they’re all on sale on her website right now! And, this weekend she launched a brand new collection.

Any of her pieces would make an amazing Christmas gift this holiday season (for you or someone you love). She also sells beautiful Native jewelry, blankets, moccasins and other accessories on her site as well, perfect for anyone on your holiday list!

Here’s how I styled the pieces she sent me…

Enjoy, babes!

A Cold Shoulder for a Warm December day

Fashion Featured 0 Comments

Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” –Rachel Zoe.

Although we’re entering Winter, here in Los Angeles temperatures have only slightly lowered from the record highs of Fall. Lucky for us we can still show a little skin without freezing.

Enter my favorite Eloquii blouse ever!

This asymmetrical off-the-shoulder button up shirt is the perfect blend: a crisp, classic piece with unique, designer-like detailing. The shoulder peeks out for a hint of sexy while the asymmetrical hemline adds interest and a stylish flair. And all of that’s wrapped up in a waist cinch made to look like the missing sleeves!

This look is perfect for Sunday brunch with your friends or a weeknight dinner date. It can be tucked in sans tie or worn out over jeans, pants, a skirt…you name it! And best of all, it’s perfect for a California December day.

How would you pair this top? Please share in the comments.

*Please excuse the wrinkles. I wore the top while hosting Eloquii’s daily Instagram Live show from their headquarters one morning in Long Island City, New York. And then I spent an hour on the train to meet up with my photographer while carrying a duffle bag full of clothes and shoes. #bts #thestruggleisreal

Because it’s Fall but it’s Also hot as Hell

“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” – Yves Saint Laurent

While most of the country is experiencing chilly Fall temperatures, Southern California has been in the middle of a heatwave. As such, I haven’t needed to pluck a warm coat or jacket – let alone boots or a scarf – from my closet yet. So, what does a fashion-loving LA babe to do when she wants to conjure up some seasonal cozy, fall vibes?

The answer lies in this dress. Fall color? Check. PJ trend? Check. Warm weather-friendly? Check.

The outfit screams Fall while being doable for current SoCal temperatures.

Whats more, you could easily transition this piece into colder Fall/Winter weather by wearing it unbuttoned over a t-shirt and distressed skinny jeans and under a jacket or pairing it with stockings, a coat and over-the-knee boots. The options are truly endless!

So, I’m curious…where do you live? What’s a part of your Fall wardrobe this year? Share in the comments.

Style Haul: Charlotte Russe Plus Size Wide Calf Over-the-knee Boots

Fashion Featured 0 Comments

“In order to kick ass you must first lift up your foot.” — Jen Sincero

I have always been a fan of boots, but as I got older they stopped loving me (and my large calves). That’s why I nearly died from shock/excitement a couple of weeks ago when I found about a dozen different styles and colors of over-the-knee wide calf boots at CharlotteRusse.com!

For yearsss I’ve been searching for the perfect OTK boot: wide enough for my muscular legs and with a sensible heel. (If you’re new here, “Hi, my name is Amy and I can’t stand heels above four inches.”) And then a few weeks ago I got an e-mail from Charlotte Russe advertising their plus size/wide-calf OTK boots. I couldn’t decide which pair to get, so I bought four pairs!

Below are the ones I chose. If these aren’t your cup of tea, they have many more. When I made my purchase each pair was less than $25. So, you may luck out and get them on sale like I did. (Sign up for their e-mails!)

Note about fit: These boots are not only for wide calves, but they’re for wide feet as well. (Woot!) I wear a 9.5, but I sized down to a 9 and I still have a bit of extra room. But, with an insole or a sock, they fit perfectly.

*For the record, this post is in no way sponsored by Charlotte Russe. I just genuinely love my new boots and wanted to share how I styled them.

Have you been able to snag a pair of wide-calf boots? If so, where’d you get them? Please share in the comments.

My Trip to Eloquii at the Pentagon City Mall

Fashion Featured 0 Comments

For all of my fellow Eloquii lovers out there, this post is for you!

I recently went to Washington, D.C. for a journalism conference. While there, I made sure to pay a visit to the Eloquii store at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City – one of just three Eloquii stores in the country! Because I knew I’d be in D.C. weeks ahead of time, I set up a styling appointment. To do this, I e-mailed the store with my preferred dates and times and then they sent me a style survey with questions like, “What colors do you feel your best in?” and “Who is your style icon?”

I made sure to make the appointment for a day/time that would work for my friend, Ashlee, who is a photographer based in nearby Philadelphia because shopping is always more fun with a friend…and because I wanted her to document this monuments occasion, of course.

As soon as we found the store, I squealed like a school girl. I walked into the store with my mouth wide open and all I could say was “Ohmygod, Ohmygod, Ohmygod…” (There’s just something about seeing all of the amazing pieces, prints, fabrics…on hangers and mannequins, where you can reach out and touch them…after only seeing them in photographs online and in catalogues.) Clearly this is a typical response because the women who work in the store weren’t fazed at all. And, I was immediately treated with V.I.P. service.

My personal stylist, Kristin (@Styled_by_KP), welcomed me with a glass of champagne and walked me to the back of the store where the dressing rooms are. I got an extra special room (it was larger and more posh than the others) with a cute little note and candy presentation. It was absolutely adorable and so special.

I was also surprised to see that Kristin had already pulled several pieces for me to consider. We talked about my initial impressions of what she picked. Most of the pieces were spot on, some I was a bit iffy about, and at least one piece I was quite certain wasn’t for me.

With that information, I began trying on the pieces while Kristin pulled a few more. This was the first look. How FAB is this outfit?!

After trying on this Scandal-inspired look, it was hard to try on anything else because it was just that good, how could anything compare!?

But then I met this soft purple number and just about died.

I really wasn’t sure about this mod-inspired sheath mini dress…

But it fit so nicely, I really got into the look. (Clearly.)

I thought this sparkly dress was cute, but I didn’t love it more than this dress…

I loved this ruffle front panel secretary-style dress SO much, I bought it…and even took the belt, too.

We spent a good deal of time doing an impromptu photoshoot. I walked the invisible catwalk a number of times. LOL

I’d seen this floral suit on several bloggers and wondered what it would look like on me. Despite how well it fit and how much I loved it, I (sadly) chose not to buy it. I figured I’d snag it when it came on sale. 🙂

I absolutely fell in LOVE with this leopard scuba pencil skirt! I didn’t end up getting the blouse because I have enough tops to pair with it in my closet at home.

I honestly didn’t think I’d be into this look, but I loved it so much I snagged both the lace blouse and jeans. They’re now one of my newest favorite go-to looks! With just enough peek-a-boo to be sexy, but mostly covered for a bit of modesty, this blouse is perfect for a casual, but sexy date night or drinks with the girls. (I wear it with a black longline bra rather than this off white one seen here.)

The jeans are perfect to pair with just about anything. Gotta love a good pair of distressed jeans! (Thanks, Eloquii!)

Three hours and $400 later and my trip was over. I had such a good time, I really didn’t want to leave. (My heart was telling me no, but my wallet was telling me “GO!”)

Thank you to Kristin for getting silly with me and making my shopping experience so much fun!

And, thank you to Ashlee for capturing all of the fun moments!

If you’re a plus size woman who loves quality made clothing and can afford a moderate price point, give Eloquii a try. And, if you live or visit Columbus, Ohio, Chicago or Washington, D.C., make sure you pay a visit to the Eloquii store there. It’s my goal to eventually visit all three! But, it’s my prayer that Eloquii eventually opens nation-wide.

In the meantime, although Eloquii clothing always fits me so well (one reason I’m in love with the brand), I’ll be able to shop with even more confidence having tried on so many things in-store.

Have you ever been to one of the brick and mortar Eloquii stores? Did you do a styling appointment, too? If so, please tell me all about it in the comments!
