More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native

More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women and men have experienced a form of v*olence in their lifetime — whether it be physical v*olence and/or psychological aggression from an intimate partner, s*xual v*olence, or st*lking, according to the @hhsgov. That’s 83%!

Native Americans are at the greatest risk of s*xual v*olence and are twice as likely to experience a r*pe / s*xual assault compared to all races, according to @rainn.

I once thought because I didn’t have a traditional (or stereotypical) Native upbringing, that I would be immune to the above statistics. I think a lot of parents of color, in particular, believe moving to the suburbs will mean their BIPOC and LGBTQ+ kids will be safer.

The truth is, these statistics exist on and off the Rez, in cities and suburbs alike. The trauma is generational and it knows where to find you. And, we can fall victim to it more than once in our lifetime.

Many of us are survivors. Even the ones you see wearing cute clothes and smiling for the ‘gram. Somehow, we have found the strength to nurse our wounds (oftentimes alone and in silence) and the resilience to continue moving forward, forever changed, wearing our scars like war paint.

Even if you haven’t personally experienced an act of v*olence, you likely know someone who has. So, when you see a Native woman laughing and smiling, know that joy may have been hard earned and the product of a resilience that is also generational AF.

Happy women’s month to all of the bad ass women and Femmes, mothers, hermanas, aunties, grandmas, tías, sisters, abuelas, and cousins who have been through battle and have come to finally know joy. And, so much love to those who may only have seen a glimmer of it. It’s a long road, but there is hope.

I see you and I love you. Please know you’re making our ancestors proud. ✊🏽🪶✨
